Complete guide on cost per hire and how to calculate it
Cost Per Hire (CPH) is an HR metric that measures the total cost a company spends to recruit one new employee. This includes all external costs (advertising, agency fees, assessment tools) and internal costs (HR time, hiring manager, training) involved in the recruitment process.
Cost Per Hire helps companies understand recruitment process efficiency, allocate budgets better, identify areas needing optimization, and compare recruitment performance with industry standards. An efficient CPH means a more profitable hiring process.
CPH = (Total Internal Costs + Total External Costs) ÷ Number of Hires
This formula calculates the average cost to recruit one employee. Internal costs include time and salary of recruitment team, while external costs include advertising, agency fees, and assessment tools.
Based on Indonesian standards: Low (< Rp 5 million) indicates very efficient process, Normal (Rp 5-15 million) meets industry standard, High (> Rp 15 million) requires review and optimization of recruitment process.
